Mobile: The Free HP iPrint Photo App for your iPhone and iPod Touch

So I just happened to be looking for some Macintosh drivers for a client and stumbled across this nifty iPod Touch and iPhone application called HP iPrint Photo.  I haven't used it myself as I'm an HP iPaq 910c user, but looks really neat for those users who would like to print photos on the go or from their house.

HP iPrint Photo

If you're not familiar with Bonjour, it used to be called Rendezvous and uses mDNS (Multicast DNS) to locate compatible devices on the network.  HP has been supporting this protocol for some time now on most of it's network capable consumer and commercial devices.  Here's a handy PDF from the Mac-Connect folks at HP which describes this in a little more detail.

For those printing from their HP iPAQ devices, HP bundles its own printing software which is extremely handy as well.  But more on that in a different post.

Over and Out.

A short time ago I had a question from a colleague asking for how this software can work with their direct-connected (USB or Parallel) device.  The short answer is to my knowledge it doesn't (although if you know to the contrary for Windows or Mac - let me know).  For Bonjour to work with the above software, it requires a relatively modern printer found directly on the network or attached to a compatible external (USB or Parallel) print server.

Here's a hint to check if you're setup and ready for Bonjour printing from your iPod.

Step 1: Bonjour works by discovering printers which reply back to requests on the same subnet (same network).  For those using their iPhones, you'll need to be connected to your router wirelessly.

Step 2: mDNS generally does not cross routers hence the importance to be on the same subnet.  Check that your printer and iPod/iPhone (when connected with wireless) have relatively similar IP addresses.  For example, most home routers use 192.168.1.1 as the gateway.  If your printer is on 192.168.1.# (where # is anything from 2 to 254) and your iPod is on 192.168.1.# (where # is anythin from 2 to 254) your iPod should be able to discover the Bonjour compatible printer.

Step 3: Confirm if your printer supports Bonjour.  Type in the IP address of your printer in your web browser.  If you're not sure what you're IP address of the printer is, press the test button on external JetDirect print servers or if it's embedded on your printer/all-in-one, go to "Reports" and "Print Configuration" (or "Information" and "Print Configuration").  Look for the field marked "IP Address" and type that into your web browser.  Navigate around the settings of the embedded web server and look for a setting called either "mDNS" (Multicast DNS), "Bonjour" or "Rendezvous" (What Bonjour was called in earlier versions of Mac OS).  You have an opportunity to call it whatever you want or leave as is.

Take care everyone.  B.
