On October 21-28, the
World Solar Challenge 2007
took place. Teams from over 15 countries participated with their solar cars crossing the Australian continent. HP sponsored two teams which participated in the journey of 3,000 km from Darwin to Adelaide in Australia. The sponsored teams got the first and second place. The Dutch Nuon Solar Team won followed by the Umicore Solar Team from Belgium. But I would say that all teams are winners.
The World Solar Challenge fosters educational and technical excellence. It draws attention to the imperatives of sustainable transport. The brief: Design and build a car capable of crossing the continent of Australia powered by nothing but the sun. – what a challenge.
HP supported the team
Nuon Solar
, which consists of students from the University of Technology in Delft. We provided the highly enthusiastic team with 11 notebooks and accessories which are used to run highly-demanding design, simulation, and modelling software. As a compulsory sitting position at a 27- degree angle has been introduced for this race, along with a compulsory double roll cage, the previous flat design had to be modified to create a solar-powered car. During the race, the HP notebooks were also used to calculate the ideal driving strategy, which is influenced by external factors such as changing weather conditions and in the real time communication between the driver of Nuna4 and the support car.
The Belgian team from the University of Leuven was also equipped with workstations, laptops, PCs and accessories to support them in designing their car, Umicar Infinity.
With this sponsorship HP underlines that we place value on innovation and
environment
.
