HP Business Institute in South Africa, let’s mobilise the potential!
One of our goals within Global Citizenship is to minimize the digital divide and foster economic development through IT education in the developing world. HP South Africa recently announced the launch of the HP Business Institute (HPBI) in South Africa under the government’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) initiative.

ICT is a clear driver of social as well as economic development and I think it is very important that we as an IT company support the access to such technology. HPBI is an independently run enterprise and skills development programme. It aims at increasing the pool of IT talent amongst South Africa’s majority black community.

In practice, HPBI equips employees of existing B-BBEE small and medium-sized IT companies with the necessary IT skills. The aim is to help create employment opportunities and close the skills gap in the ICT sector. In addition we want to offer special short term skills programmes and traineeships for a year to selected students. The kick-off with the first students will take place in February 2008. Our aim is to provide 300 students with training annually.

South Africa has great potential and I hope that we can support and foster this potential even more with the help of HPBI.

To learn more about the HPBI, you can read an interview with Benni North of HP South Africa in the November edition of our Global Citizenship Bulletin.
