There are quite a few CSR awards out there where companies and NGOs are asked to apply with their most innovative strategies.
The World Business Green Business Award
is one of them. When I heard about it for the first time I very much liked the connection between "Green" and "Business" and realized if a business magazine like "World Business" is sponsoring such an award it is with a clear intention to honor best environmental practices closely connected to business strategies. And this is what we are aiming for at HP.
The success of a CSR strategy within a company depends very much on how closely it is connected to business objectives and how strongly it supports their fulfillment. So we decided to enter the Green Business Award organized by World Business Magazine and we were selected as finalists for two of our internal communication projects on energy efficiency.
The first entry was related to our employee awareness campaign which started earlier this year and has been targeted to sensitize employees across Europe, the Middle East and Africa on
HP´s engagement around energy efficient operational processes and products
. Key components of the campaign were posters translated into seven languages that promoted "Watts-on" - an online game to test employees know-how around our energy efficient products, a quiz and ideas contest as well as environment employee events in 18 countries between June and October 2007.
The second entry focused on our global ideas contest where employees have been asked to contribute with ideas that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions at HP and at home.
Both entries were selected as finalists in the category "Best HR strategy". Even if in the end we didn’t win the award of this category - the winner was UK based Accor Novotel London West for an employee awareness campaign around energy efficiency and the reach out to its food suppliers on improving the environment - we are very honored that we made it into the final round out of hundreds of other qualified applications.
This clearly shows how relevant employee awareness campaigns are as there are often pretty good environmental credentials within a company but if employees as the key ambassadors to customers are not aware of them their value does not really pay off.
We feel encouraged to continue our work in innovative internal and external CSR communications projects with a special focus on energy efficiency and will look into new award winning opportunities going forward. Many thanks to the jury of World Business Green Business Award for having recognized our work!
