Social enterprise enters the stage, says Financial Times article

In his recent Financial Times article Chip Feiss outlines a potential fourth sector: the social enterprise. With the call for corporate social responsibility, sustainability and corporate citizenship, this is not digressive.

A social enterprise can be either pro-profit or non-profit: The idea behind this is that it aims at serving the public/common good. Prominent examples are probably Fair Trade organisations.

I agree with Chip that there is considerable potential for social enterprises and also for social firms to open up a fourth sector. I cannot imagine why this should not happen. Maybe, if we want to tackle our global social challenges from yet another angle, it’s a necessary thing that should happen.

Do you know of any social enterprises or do you perhaps work for one? If you do, please leave a comment and tell me more about it.

Hi Jeannette,

I've been running Banburyshire Media as a social enterprise for the best part of two years now. As a not-for-profit setup I think it works much better then the previous IT services company I ran, as it is more focussed on the organisations I raise funds for. It also allows me more freedom, to dip in and out of projects, when time allows, instead of always having to generate income on a month-by-month basis.

As with a lot of the products I have developed over the past six or seven years, the concept of a social enterprise takes some getting used to. But, like many enlightened others, I think they are the key to a socially responsible future, leaving the "profit at all costs" companies behind, and having much more freedom than the charitable and government sectors, with reduced red-tape.

They have certainly been very successful in the running of sports and leisure centres, and in other comunity-orientated areas, but it seems the time has come for social enterprises to become mainstream.

In order to rise to the challenges of environmental and social changes we are faced with, I believe that social enterprises are going to be key in providing acceptable outcomes in a fast enough timeframe.

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts on the relevance of social enterprises with us. Yes, indeed social enterprises will be a more and more relevant company model for the future as governments and more traditional private companies are only able to address social needs in communities to a certain extent. NPOs are partners who help to close gaps in communities, other organisations may not be able to address in a similar way. I congratulate you for setting up a social company yourself and wish you all the best for your undertakings!
