New WWF study: Go where the jobs are. Go green

In economic hard times reports about layoffs and wage-cutting dominate the news agenda. A new WWF study, however, provides much more positive news and shows real opportunities. The report actually discusses how ’green industries’ such as renewable energy, green transport and energy-efficient goods and services are creating jobs. Currently, there are more jobs in those industries than in industries such as mining, gas or steel. The prospects, therefore, are that jobs in the former industries will rise, whilst jobs in the latter are falling.

WWF does great work and publishes frequent reports on important issues. Last year, for example, WWF published a report entitled ’The potential global CO2 reductions from ICT use: Identifying and assessing the opportunities to reduce the first billion tonnes of CO2’ which addresses the need for and potential of energy efficient ICT solutions.

Hi Jeannette ,

While energy efficient (ICT) solutions are commendable, we need to be thinking more about the supply side of energy, if we are to maintain any sort of quality of life (and work).

I took one of my overviews of technology on show 188 of The Banburyshire Brolly podcast, put out last December, where I concentrated on energy production and transport, two key areas, in my view.

A transcript of the show can be read at www.banburyshire.com/show188.pdf

There is no doubt that green tech is going to be a major growth sector, but we need to have a framework in place to position, and prioritise,  these technologies.

Hi Jules,

thanks a lot for sharing very valid thoughts with us and pointing us on pretty interesting information summarizing some of your work. You are absolutely right that Green IT is only one part of the story to help to signifianctly reduce our carbon footprint and to improve the quality of our lives. Let's collaborate where ever possible to ensure we capture the whole picture to bring required solutions forward.

Kind regards,

Jeannette
