Data Protector for VMware podcast

By Calvin Zito

An often overlooked gem in HP's storage portfolio is HP Data Protector.  I sat down to talk data protection of virtual machines and more specifically of VMware with Billy Naples, the HP Data Protector Product Marketing Manager.  Billy knows data protection and this was a fun discussion for me to have, especially with VMworld next week.

Hi Calvin,

I just listened to your podcast with Billy Naples regarding Data Protector and VMware.  Great stuff!

I was first introduced to Omniback II at version 2.55 while working as the lead HP-UX Systems Programmer at a large, travel-related enterprise.  My manager walked in, dropped the OBII box on my desk, and asked me to replace fbackup with this new product.  Thus began my long and successful relationship with what is now Data Protector.  After almost nine years at that job, I joined HP as one of the biggest DP evangelists you’ll likely find on the planet.  I deliver short-term, per-event consulting for HP’s enterprise customers.  While some engagements are for Serviceguard, HP-UX performance analysis, and storage products like Business Copy XP, my mainstay over the past two years has been Data Protector.

It’s wonderful to see more visibility on the product side and a stronger push for DP.  I’d like to see it go from “hidden gem” to “crown jewel”.  Let me know what I can do to help, and I’ll be there!

Thanks,

Jim
