Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes!
First let me apologize for the larger-than-normal gap between blog posts. In addition to my role as president of the Connect user community, I also work for 4th Source, a software development company, sit on another non-profit board, and I’m training for my 7th endurance event, the ING Marathon on March 30th.   In my ‘spare’ time, I read and love up my family and two dogs. I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly getting tired of all the negative news. It’s kind of like stepping on the scale every morning…YUCK! Since I don’t have time to escape to the beach, I’ll summon the lyrics of my fave beach tune crooner, Jimmy Buffet.   It’s these changes in latitudes I need to give a BIG shout out to our newly affiliated Connect chapters from South Africa to Australia and many points in between, Connect is growing into the largest technology user community representing the largest IT company in the world. Woo Hoo!  Changes in attitudes  Is it me or are people getting nicer!  I travel quite a bit and over the past 6 months I’ve noticed that people in the service industry are getting nicer…maybe they’re appreciating their jobs more; maybe their sympathizing/empathizing with the customer more. Whatever it is, I like it and I hope that this continues! I called my cell service provider recently because of an issue I was having with my new BB Storm. The customer service rep offered to call me back when the new software release was available. WOW!  Nothing remains quite the same A few years ago I listened to Randy Mott describe the new HP datacenter model and the investments that were being made to save HP lots of money in the future. The future is here and HP has already realized the economies from that investment. The message is don’t wait for things to ‘get better’….make them better. This recession will not last forever and it will be the companies that creatively and strategically invest in their future today that will come out on top tomorrow.  If you’re concerned about your job…I’d rather be the one implementing new ideas than the one who was hiding under the radar.  This is also a buyer’s market so companies, like HP, are doing all they can to woo your business and come up with solutions like Green IT and Storage Virtualization to help you save and ultimately make money.   And speaking of buyer’s market, during a recent retail therapy ‘session’, I  found that even  retailers are willing to play ‘Let’s Make a Deal!’  Things will get better; they always do.   With all of our running I know I’ve been saying this for months, but since repetition is the mother of skill…I’ll say it again. If you have a job, make sure that your resume is current and relevant.  Stay engaged with your user community, Connect, and make yourself visible in the community!   Everyone is busy running, but make sure that you take time to invest in yourself and prepare for your future.  And all of our cunning I’m around some of the smartest people in this industry (lucky me!) and the reason why they are so smart is because they’re all willing to learn. By being part of a community, they learn from each other, learn from content provided through webinars and chapter meetings, and attend the HP Technology Forum & Expo to learn from industry experts.  If we couldn’t laugh we’d all go insane! I’m a comedy junky. I want to be around people who make me laugh…I want to make others laugh or at least smile J and I want to be inspired to be the best I can be.  And speaking of inspiration, thanks JB for the blog inspiration.  As I wrote, I imagined that I was sitting on the beach with my HP Pavilion,  sipping on my frozen concoction, and thinking about all of the opportunities ahead.

Cheers!

Nina
