A customer viewpoint on Dell blades vs HP blades

I ran across a blog post from one of our customers who wanted to see if the grass was greener on Dell's side of the blade fence. I thought some other folks out there might like to see his perspective and thought process.

You can read it here on the Technophilia blog.

His big takeaway is something we've been evangelizing for a while -- the heart and soul of blade benefits come from better ways to manage and connect to the the LAN and SAN.  Gary did a great job explaining our philosophy in his post Why we created Virtual Connect about simplicity and and helping admins be self-sufficient.  Lee Johns also touched on this the other day in part 1 and part 2 of his storage Q&A.

The fact is, if you choose to go with pass-throughs or patch panels to connect your blades to your networks, you are barely scratching the surface of the potential of your blade infrastructure.

As an IT manager that runs several Dell M1000's along with the older 1955's not to mention Dell's as old as 6350's,  I do not understand why the Dell Tech Rep he spoke to would recommend the passthru modules?

Our reps recommended the CISCO 3130x or 3130g switch of wich you have a 10GB option. Not the same as the VIrtual Connect 10 module but in our organization the network guys want to maintain contol on whats on the network and to them that mean it will be a CISCO device.

I am approached almost weekly by HP and our VAR to move to the HP C7000 and each time I ask what is the biggest beneift I get Virtual connect. Of all the reasons I can think of I only get VC. When you look at performance we get and look at the pricing (30K savings on a fully decked chassis populate with 12blades for the last quote I did) It doesnt make sense. There is nothing bad to say about the HP  C-7000 and BL-460 blades, however they are not worth the 25% premium that HP and the VAR's want to see the for. Also it doesnt make sense for me to move away from the Dell Mgmt Platform that my Admins are used to. The interfaces on the Dell DRAC's since the 2650 have stayed the same and my admins can admin any boxes in the series without having to fumble through the changes that HP make from series to series.

I have worked with HP back in the NetServers days, and have had evaluation units of the various gens of the 380 and 580 lines and each time the value for us went to Dell.

Propoganda like this does not help HP's case to me as there are options on the Dell side that the author of the blog was not informed about or neglected to state.

Hi,

A great place to find out if Dell, HP, or SUN had a greener grass it to look at independent comparisons of blades at itcomparison.com. These can be located at:

itcomparison.com/.../Bladeshpvsdell.htm

itcomparison.com/.../Bladeshpvssun.htm

itcomparison.com/.../Bladesdellvssun.htm

I hope that help some one compare these to find a greener grass from independent perspective rather HP, Dell or SUN perspective.

Enjoy,

Bladecenter Master
