Thanks for writing such a great article on the importance of remembering film's ongoing evolution of photography within (and without) current digital technologies.
All of us photographers who spent years developing relationships with particular film emulsions and characteristics of development really value the "personality" of each film. Nice to see this viewpoint supported here.
The current climate in "Imaging" seems to lead few photographers to ever take the time to really know their equipment on the way to the next inevitable upgrade. Understanding a sensor's particular limitations or capabilities just doesn't have the same allure or payoff as figuring out how to finesse film.
Pre-digital, upgrading meant buying a better lens, for most photographers using SLR's. Film and technique in the darkroom brought results.
Forgetting to occasionally use film really shortchanges the depth of understanding and complexity of textural character available when a photographer chooses to dust off the manual SLR and load up a roll of their favorite stock.
I'm a digital and film photographer, and it's wonderful to see that that's not yet a dying breed.
