What do backup software and cars have in common?

By Harald Burose

Last week we had our sales kick off in Las Vegas and in the central Information Management sessions we focused on E-Discovery and the challenges the industry is facing. Challenges like data collection for legal cases taking a considerable amount of time and the ability to preserve and find relevant data impacting millions of dollars. Now what does this have to do with cars? There are actually multiple analogies. First, the car industry must continuously adjust itself to stay competitive. It is improving car efficiency and providing new features and functions to the consumer, making the experience safer, more intuitive and more informative. The sessions at the kick off made it very clear that data protection software must once again adjust to new challenges in the market. Over the past 20 years, backup software has continuously adjusted to new challenges, from pure file level tape backup, to application online backup, to disk assisted backup to backup on disk itself. Those changes optimized the time it takes to backup or restore data. The current challenges are less about the target media and more about managing the meta data, content to allow quick identification of information. I have addressed how that can be achieved in previous blogs. Another analogy to cars is the engine. Diesel engines are now running in almost every car, including trucks that are very efficient. Did you know that AUDI just released the first AUDI TT, a sports car with a diesel engine? AUDI was winning Le Mans with a Diesel based car before. Besides the power it provides, the engine itself is not very visible in the overall car yet it is one of the most essentials parts. Backup software in that regards is very similar. It is something every enterprise either small or big must have but nobody really wants to talk about it extensively. We expect it to work seamlessly in the background and to be there when we need it. This is very similar to an engine in a car. One more thing - Did you know that HP's Data Protector is developed out of Germany?  "German Engineering in the House," to quote a Volkswagen television commercial. See you on the next blog.
