I'm only talking about a byte or two for the ID and level (which, granted, requires a bit of work on the part of the consumer to properly label each cartridge to avoid his/her own confusion as to which is which!), and a few lines of code to ask the user for the ID, and to record/retrieve the ID and its corresponding level (maybe limit it to four cartridges, and even allow the user to manually manipulate the ID and levels at his/her own "risk"). All this could be done at the software level and saved on the user's computer in the appropriate HP inkjet or other directory. (I *will* get royalties for HP's use of this concept, right?) ;)

Please don’t consider my omission of supplies as strategic, rather a tactical shortfall in my blog completeness. Deskjet was from day one, and always will be, part of a “systems” solution that requires hardware & software, media, and ink. Performance balancing across all three of these is required to make the whole solution work to the levels of performance that customers have come to expect. Huge contributions from ink and media have taken place, and each of these two areas deserves a blog of their own. My apologies to the supply team for any slight. - Paul

re: Should You Turn Your Printer Off when You aren’t Using It?

Help! My HP Deskjet D4160 will not print the color red. all other colors are fine.

re: Reflections on Deskjet’s 20th anniversary: A toast to the customers who made it possible!

Great review! I was left a little wanting for the contribution from ink and media supplies during this tremendous success story. Living in the media world, we went to paper mills around the world convincing them to modify their chemistry and processes to produce low cost office papers that would work well with Deskjets everytime. This was at the time the Deskjet 500C was first making its mark in the world. Media has come a long way since, and helped Deskjet (and Designjet) printers reach the performance they have truly earned!

re: Do HP Inkjet Printers use Different Types of Ink for Photos and Documents?

I am using an HP Officejetpro L7680. I am trying to use inkjet transfer paper from Lazertran to transpose an image from any printable source on to the transfer paper which, when dry, becomes a water slide decal. The print out is excellent, but the ink (black or color) won't dry. I've tried clear acrylic spray to coat the printed image, that helps a little. I've contacted Lazerjet via telephone and they are supposed to get back to me. I'm using the ink that came with the printer.

It has the Energy Star logo but what I have noticed is that the printer does NOT always powe down (i.e., put itself in standby mode when not in use for a while). I can tell by looking at the display monitor light to see if its off or on. A few times I have noticed that when after I print something, the display panel light is still on and lighted throughout the night and in some other cases, the display panel light just shuts off by itself - although i'd know right away that the printer is on because it is emitting a blue light for the wireless mode (this printer has a Wireless mode feature). Appreciate any inpyt!
