Important piece in the Chron entitled "Internet researcher warns innovation lagging" about Judy Estrin's book on the state of the research and development onion in the USA, in particular and Si Valley, in particular. It's important because there seem to be precious few people who are prepared to call it as it is in public.

She argues that corporate financial pressures and less government funding have undermined support for the forward-looking research that leads to innovative and revolutionary products. Personally, I would say there is a common denominator with an IP address on Wall St.

I'd heard the terms sociopath and psychopath, but I always thought those terms just applied to dysfunctional killers and career criminals. So when my husband would physically abuse me, lie constantly, cheat incessantly, steal money from the household account to spend on his girlriends and then somehow make me feel like my ways as a wife made him do it, I'd believe him. After all, he is very charming to people who don't live inside our house and most people think he's a great guy. Finally, this craziness that i've been living with has a name, and now i don't feel like i'm crazy or defective or respomsible for his bad ways or the devastation his behavior has caused. A friend who's majoring in psychology told me the name of this disease, and I'm so thankful for your website. This kind of awareness is truly necessary and healing. Thank-you!

Somehow new comments are showing up for this old post. I would like to make two remarks. The first is that what in the rest of the world is called a psychopath (no conscience, no remorse, no feelings) here in the USA is lumped in with sociopaths (behave like a psychopath, but have a normal brain and can be cured). If you are in an aftermath, you may want to understand the difference so you know what you deal with.

As with many other concerns, there is a lot of lore about the aftermath on the WWW. You may want to stick to sites backed by specialists in the field, be they forensic psychiatrists or academic researchers. Also, you may want to consult a professional and in case of an emergency call 9-1-1. A web site for people with psychopaths in their lives has been set up under the name Aftermath: Surviving Psychopathy at http://www.aftermath-surviving-psychopathy.org/. have lived with a sociopath for 35years. He is from the us, i am english. We have lived in england all the time. He gambled and also lied and cheated, bullied and manipulated. He is a social worker working in the us--the con carries on---my sons and I are now free to rebuild our lives. He was highly respected over here and really believes he is the victim. No conscience, no remorse. Very scarey.

My adjustments was quite off the "world wide gamma" like an S instead of a straight line. I adjusted the patches to get the most smooth transition I could between black and white and also the most aesthetically pleasant to me. So I guess aesthetical perception might also be a significant parameter that affects the resulted "world wide gamma"...

According to one of the authors, the "Olympic dial" may have been a kind of ancient Greek "plug-in".

I am fed up with so many victims including myself suffering the evil of sociopaths. Some victims may be vunerable enough to end in a fatality.

Knowlege and exposure is needed. Learn the disease. Stop the abuse.
