Let’s get started

Hi there.  Welcome to my blog:  Martin’s Musings on Mission Critical Computing.  For those of you who don’t know me, I run what we call “Business Critical Systems” at HP.  Whenever you think of high-end and mission critical computing, it’s most likely my team that takes the lead for HP.  My goal with this blog will be to comment on events and happening in the mission critical computing space.  I’ll share my thoughts on current events, and where I think things are heading.  I’ll try to avoid blatant marketing stuff (we have other venues for that), but I’ll make you tolerate a few pokes at my main competitors (hopefully in a fun and lighthearted way).  If for some reason I feel the need to take a break from my day job, I may also comment on a few of my main hobbies: Home Theaters and Digital Multimedia creation.  I expect disagreements along the way, so feel free to share.  Blogging is about sharing, sometimes we’ll agree, and sometimes we won’t.  – Martin

I would love to hear what HP plans for digital multimedia.

Hello Martin,

Can you expound a little more on some of the more technical areas of MCC that your group performs? I would be interested in more speciifc tasks realted to like the MCC aspect of the new Blade system.  Do we still have the multi-node capability here, as with the PA-RISC based architecture for ServiceGuard?   In that we can have multiple POF for networks, hardware, filesystems IP etc... In what ways might this be different with the Blade system, I guess is my question?

I fail to understand why "Mission Critical" is always projeted as "high end". As if a small or medium busines wouldn't require that type of system, only smaller (and cheaper) than the big datacenter requires and can afford. Today, most SMB are actually forced to use systems that cannot offer the required stability, reliability and security that BCS offers.

I noticed that the title of this article was:

"mission critical servers high-end UNIX BCS"

Isn't NON-STOP and OpenVMS also part of BCS?  Just wonderin'.

While I have a significant personal interest in digital multimedia, I'm not the one who drives HP digital media strategy.  You can find data on HP's digital media activities here:
