HP Network Automation 7.5 reporting for duty

by Stelio D’Alo

Hi, and thanks for checking out my first post. I’d like to introduce you to a relatively new member of the HP network management software family, HP Network Automation software, a network change, configuration and compliance management application.

What is HP Network Automation software (HP NA)?

Many of you will have known it as Opsware Network Automation System, or Opsware NAS.

I’m often asked by NNM customers if HP NA can replace NNM. The answer is a definite no, because they offer related, but different capabilities. HP NA is a companion to NNMi and many other HP software applications. HP NA is an integrated part of both the integrated data center automation solution in the HP Business Service Automation suite as well as integrated with HP NNMi software. Whereas NNMi software is our latest network management solution, HP NA is a network change and configuration management, or NCCM, product. The two get along famously, and actually have little overlap in features.

NNMi + NA deliver network lifecycle management for Operators and Network Engineers. You can start with either product and add the other later, or start with both. You can even install both products on a single server for many network environments.

What’s the latest version?

HP Network Automation 7.5 is the latest release, and includes many new customer-driven capabilities, including

• Advanced bare metal and template based provisioning

• VLAN templates and virtual device drivers ease server virtualization management

• Advanced Multi-tenancy support for Managed Service Providers

• Additional NNMi integrations

What this means:

• It helps you automate the rollout and management of cloud infrastructures

• New features specifically for those of you who are Managed Service Providers

• Faster provisioning of new network devices and virtualized infrastructures

• We have drivers for Cisco Call Manager, extending coverage for VoIP

• GUI based Network Driver Studio allows you to develop your own drivers

Basically, we have increased what we can automate for you. Provisioning, visibility into what devices are in your network and how they’re configured; and compliance/policy enforcement is what NA is all about. The more we automate the faster you can do your job the more you save. One of my favorite user stories is about the network engineers in a customer that automated to the point they started getting to take most of their weekends off for the first time in a long time. Now that’s the kind of thing we like to hear about. And the additions to the integration with NNMi provides more functions via a “single pane of glass”

Want more?

I’ll be back with more information on this software, and NA usage to realize incredible ROI. In the meantime, please visit us at hp.com/go/NAsoftware.

What is the minimum system requirements to install HP Network Automation Tool in my system?

Michael_Procopio wrote re: HP Network Automation 7.5 reporting for duty

Sorry for the delayed response.

Network Automation (NA) requires at least a 2GHz x86, 2GBytes RAM, 100GB harddisk. NA uses MySQL which takes up some of that RAM.

You can download an evaluation here - h10078.www1.hp.com/.../hpms_content.jsp

Let ua know if you have any other questions.

Hi,

do we have an evaluation version of Network Driver Studio ?

Hi Rajeev,

If you are an existing customer with a support contract you can get access via the support site.

If you are evaluating and not yet a customer please contact you HP Sales Rep.

Hi

Do HP Network automation has support to add and delete VLAN?

steliodalo wrote re: HP Network Automation 7.5 reporting for duty

Hi Deepak,

You bet. HP Network Automation software helps quite a bit with managing VLANs. Regarding adding and deleting VLANs, HP NA helps with any configuration change, including adding and deleting VLANS.  Users can write and run generic command scripts from the HP NA UI and input VLANS to add or delete.  HP NA can then run these commands against one or more device in bulk.  HP NA provides security around who can run these scripts, against which devices, require approval, keep users out of the CLI of the device to avoid mistakes, and audit trail the entire process.

I hope that helps.

can we modify the user interface of Network Automation to suite our requirements ?

That's a pretty open question. Can you clarify what you mean?

How would HP NA integrate with a CMDB like BMC Atrium ?

If NA can discover components on a network, can it supply the information about CI's to a CMDB?

steliodalo wrote re: HP Network Automation 7.5 reporting for duty

Hi Jack,

HP Network Automation software is integrated with the HP Universal CMDB, so that it supplies the CI information to the CMDB.

You can integrate with third party CMDBs as well, typically through HP Professional Services. We're all about open standards, so the API is available and supported.

Depending on the version of HP NA (or Opsware NAS) and BMC Atrium you have, there may be an existing integration available for purchase.

Regards, Stelio

Can we add any new menuitem/menu in the NAS UI ? Let say

"Create VLAN" and onclick of it can call script etc .

One of the attributes users love about the product is that the GUI is a light weight, fast, web based interface. In order to deliver that kind of performance and portability, the ability to customize the interface needs to be limited. Our customers have consistently told us that portability and performance are king. And we are delivering royally on that edict. [Did you catch the puns?]

If I have created a device driver and want that driver should be published ,so that the device could be listed on HP NA certified product list.  what is the procedure for Driver certification ?

Can NA run standalone without NNM integration? If yes, then how does NA discover network devices and what type of information is collected about those devices and how does this information differ from that collected by NNM? thanks! great article!

Hi Mithilesh, it's very cool that you are joining the growing ranks of users who've written your own device driver. You can share it, if you like, on the BSA Essentials network (www.hp.com/go/bsaessentialsnetwork). At this time, if you'd like to have HP officially support a new driver, you could have it developed by HP Professional services or an approved HP Partner. In your case, you could also engage with HP Professional Services to validate the driver you built. If you're interested in doing that, I'd recommend the community and the HP NA Network Driver Studio (NDS) info on the network.

Hi umarali121,

Thanks for your kudos. Much appreciated.

HP NA and HP NNMi are separate products and can be run separately as well. NA discovers devices using SNMP or Telnet/SSH. The information collected by NA is quite detailed, for example device model number, amount of RAM, installed modules, layer 2 and 3 connectivity. NNMi’s discovery is looking at devices, their ports/interfaces and physical as well as logical connectivity, and in some cases like PaGP and HSRP we are discovering and monitoring these advanced network services at the protocol level.  NNMi is also going to do device level discovery for state/status determination – these are things like memory, cpu, buffer, fans, etc. With iSPI Performance you also get performance information.

Hope that answers your question. Just a reminder that a collection of information on NNMi, performance and NA products is available on our ANLM landing page at www.hp.com/go/ANLM.

If you hide those features and elements that matters most to potential customers.. what makes you think that potential customers will keep foraging in your website until they either come to the realisation that your product is worthwhile or that you don't know how to sell a very good product on the web and therefore wonder where else in the business engagement model will you fail?  Support? Delivery? Professional Services? hmmm.

Mind you.. I am looking for OSS and telco application cases for your NA product.$$$$$

I regret that you had trouble findng what you were looking for on the website. Here are some URLs that may be of interest to others that are looking for related information. hp.com/go/NAsoftware for the NCCM product, hp.com/go/NMC for event, performance and change management portfolio, hp.com/go/ANLM for the automated network lifecycle solution, hp.com/go/BSAessentialsNetwork for the new business service automation portal, including community forums.

Can HP NA be used to deploy an intrusion detection system to network devices?

steliodalo wrote re: HP Network Automation 7.5 reporting for duty
on 07-20-2009 6:20 PM

Hi Mike, I'm not aware of intrusion detection systems that deploy on individual network devices, as they typically run on the network, inspecting all packet traffic, not just traffic to an individual device.

I downloaded the HP NA 7.5 evaluation using the link above, but it was just a 3.5GB ISO, with no trial license.dat.  Where do I get the license.dat?

Thanks!
