Cost effective networking – The choice is yours

There is no question in my mind, the economic environment businesses operate in today is complex and volatile – stripping IT budgets while maintaining high expectations to meet business imperatives.  Yet the question of how to optimize this “big picture” remains.

More than ever, excessive IT spending is a thing of the past as IT teams are forced to examine network infrastructures and find cost effective, more flexible solutions to support business objectives.

Initial hardware investments are no longer the only cost incurred as additional features – hardware/software updates, maintenance contracts, network management and security – all contribute to a business’s cost of ownership.

Today, it ultimately comes down to the cost and solution needed when designing a network – proprietary vs. open-standards – that challenges IT departments.

Perceived as easy and safe to adopt, proprietary solutions come with comprehensive professional services. Sure, there is one neck to choke but at what cost? These same networks are incredibly inflexible and limiting solutions with expensive and on-going price tags.

Organizations must understand the capabilities and scalability of the network solution.  All too often, proprietary solutions lack the freedom to centrally manage the network in a unified fashion and scale appropriately to meet business needs – making network operations expensive and less transparent.

A standards-based solution offers a far different approach; addressing these challenges directly with flexible solutions that help businesses simplify the network, provide the flexibility to choose the best available solution yet minimize the operational and integration headaches through standards compliance. Adopting these open systems give customers the ability to design a networking tailored to their business needs.

Does it make sense to continue down the path of proprietary, costly and restrictive solutions? You know where I stand - break free with standards-based approach to networking.

Jeremy has clearly demonstrated his technical proficiency, and your comments are plainly a dig at him. Why don't you address the issues with your equipment instead of resorting to taking shots at your customers?  I'll be sure I never recommend HP gear after reading his experiences with HP.

The following comment is being reposted due to a technical error:

Actually, the choice isn't mine, unfortunately.  I'm a "technical" guy, i.e. one who has to implement, configure, and maintain ProCurve equipment.  You guys do well at catering to the beancounters, though, I'll give you that.

If the choice were mine, I wouldn't have had a couple truckloads of 5400s come through the loading dock.  It would have Cisco or Juniper gear instead -- you know, equipment that actually has some of the features I need.

Your switches are okay at layer 2, they work great there.  But for those of us who need some of these advanced features, you're just not there.  First chance I get, I'm ripping out every piece of ProCurve gear I have that's running at layer 3 and they'll be replaced with an "incredibly inflexible and limiting solution".

I'm not sure what you're trying to say there Jeremy but it sounds like you don't really know either.

If you're looking to give good feedback you should list what features you are missing and ask for them to be added. Feedback needs to be actionable, you product is incredibly inflexible and limiting solution is a horrible way of saying "I would rather buy a badge then your product".

If anything is clear it's that you don't really know how to configure these switches and you don't want to bother learning because it's not Cisco or Juniper.

Good day sir.

Alex,

Please know that the comments in response to Jeremy's thoughts were not posted by HP.  We actively dialog with customers and try to understand their product and solution needs as well as any issues they are having with products.  Just recently we sent out a survey in an effort to gain customer feedback on our products.  Please feel free to respond to the survey here: www.questback.com/.../gss_survey1

Thanks,

Jeremy,

I am pleased to hear we cater to the financial needs of your company with cost effective networking solutions.

HP ProCurve 5400 switch is one of our flagship products, and as such we continue to add features via software updates. From your response I gather that we have not done a good job of communicating the features and capabilities of 5400s switches or we have fallen short in meeting your needs. If you can identify the specific capabilities you are looking for, it would help our product team in understanding the gaps that we need to address.

Could it be possible that 5400s have the features you are looking for and we haven’t done a good job at transferring that knowledge to you?  In terms of L3 capabilities – have you looked at the Premium License?
