Product Manager, Insight Control power management

HP is introducing Data Center Power Control, the newest power management feature of Insight Control. I want to share a cool story about how this product was invented after a nearly catastrophic event at an HP site. We used our experience to innovate and make sure your company doesn’t go through a similar experience.

Last summer, a water chiller failed in the computer room at an HP site. As a result, our engineers had to run around manually turning off the systems before they crashed. We were fortunate because the right people were in place to do this as it happened, even though it was a manual process. That got our engineers thinking… if only there were a way to set pre-defined policies to automatically shutdown servers or lower the power state during catastrophic events. Today that’s a reality because of HP Data Center Power Control. In a nutshell, you set the guidelines in advance so that you can extend the ride-through time for mission critical apps by reducing power usage by non-critical workloads when there’s a failure.

Another important perk is the ability to lower your energy bill by taking control of your power usage during peak times. Imagine the utility company contacts you and says you need to shed 50 KWh of power today from 3 – 6 PM. That’s no problem with HP Data Center Power Control. You can also drop power usage during peak or coincident peak times. This helps you drive your infrastructure into a more efficient operating range. It’s also good for scheduled maintenance. At the given maintenance time, you can shed power to make sure certain servers are powered down. The best part is that it’s as easy as pressing a button.

What are your thoughts on Data Center Power Control? Has your company had a catastrophic failure or needed to shed power quickly where this capability would have been useful?

Gaining a 4D view of your data center

By Brandon Fears

Product Manager, HP Data Center Environmental Edge

Part of the focus of the HP Data Center Smart Grid is not only monitoring / managing power at the IT level, but also visualizing and optimizing the power and cooling infrastructure. This is where the newest version of the HP Data Center Environmental Edge solution is key to achieving the insight needed to measure and understand current energy usage and historical trends. The solution helps both IT and facility managers understand how their cooling infrastructure is operating and visually show where they have issues to be addressed.

As the team began the development on the Environmental Edge Program, we conducted customer visits and formal market research to better understand how customers monitor and optimize their data centers. The one item that kept coming to the top was the lack of knowledge on how much power in KWh was consumed in a day, week or a month. The most common answers were, “Maybe if I look at our electrical bill”, or “I don’t know because the data center is part of the office and facility managers pay the bill”. Therefore we began working on the second half of the Environmental Edge solution: power visualization.

In the view below, as the customer scrolls over their data center layout, they can see real time results from the energy base stations to understand power, and environmental base stations to get information on cooling at the rack level.

Customers can also provide drill down on an energy meter and get more robust information, amps per phase, voltage per phase, KWh, and power factor.

Additionally, the solution can show power usage for the past 18 months, and provide several different reports. This is just part of the new power visualization capabilities. Customers can also opt to have real-time PUE, see power consumption at the rack level with our branch circuit monitoring solution (BCMS). The goal of our solution is to help customers use their infrastructure more efficiently and help match the output to the needs of IT.

Time to connect datacenter IT with facilities and unleash their trapped energy capacity

By: Doug Oathout, VP of Green IT Enterprise Storage and Servers

Time to connect datacenter IT with facilities and unleash their trapped energy capacity

IT organizations have been building infrastructure in silos for twenty years; the network administrator builds the interconnects, the storage administrator makes sure the data is accessible and secure, the servers administrator monitors application and server availability and the facilities manager makes sure everything is getting enough power and cooling to run safely. This all sounds good until you run out of space, power and above all money, now what do you do?

Enter HP Data Center Smart Grid

The HP Data Center Smart Grid creates an intelligent, energy-aware environment across IT and facilities to optimize and adapt energy use. It collects and communicates thousands of power and cooling measurements across IT systems and facilities in real-time to give customers more efficient insight and control over energy use. This lets customers support business growth by hosting more applications and services within the same energy footprint, thereby making more effective use of existing capacity and capital investments.

Key benefits:

Increases the capacity and useful lifespan of the data center, postponing or eliminating additional capital expense

Reduces operating costs required to power and cooling IT systems

Improves reliability by optimizing power and cooling efficiency of IT and facilities

Provides insight and control over energy costs and environmental impact

HP Data Center Smart Grid works in concert with the HP Infrastructure Operating Environment, HP Flex Fabric, and HP Virtual Resource Pools for continual optimization of your Converged Infrastructure.

New AMD Six-core Opteron™ Processors add more horsepower to the industry’s x-86 workhorse

Current economic,
environmental and energy constraints often do not make it possible to add
additional servers in the data center to align with the demands of the
business. As a result, companies are looking to consolidate workloads on
fewer servers to reclaim the underutilized capacity, lower the total cost of
ownership and simplify data center management. Virtualization technologies,
like VMware, on larger platforms such as the HP ProLiant DL785 G6 are key to
improving server utilization.

HP
ProLiant DL785 G6,
with 48 processing cores, up to 512 GB memory and 11 PCI-e I/O ports, provides
ample resources for very large number of virtual machines and offers a very
high consolidation and virtualization ratio. The new world-record VMMark benchmark result with 53.73
score while running 210 virtual machines proves that the HP ProLiant DL785 G6 is ideal
for virtualization and consolidation environments. The industry x-86 workhorse
beats the nearest 8-socket competitor by almost 58% on VMMark benchmark.

DL785 G6
shows increased scalability with the new AMD Opteron processors. As compared to
the previous result on DL785 G5 (with 8 Quad-Core processors), the DL785 G6
(with 8 six-core processors) showed 70.2% increased performance. I have been
asked this question many times – what makes DL785 G6 or other multi-processor
ProLiant servers with the new six-core Opteron processors run more than 50%
faster than the previous generation G5 servers with AMD quad core processors?

In
addition to the virtualization acceleration technology like Rapid Virtualization indexing (RVI) ,
the newly introduced HT-Assit
with six-core 8400 series AMD Opteron processors is a key contributor to the excellent performance of HP
multi-processor servers including DL785 G6.

HT Assist
helps reduces memory latency, improves HyperTransport bus efficiency and
increases overall system performance in multi-processor systems by reducing the
probe traffic and resolving probes quickly. It can eliminate the probe
broadcasting in 8 out of 11 typical CPU-to-CPU transactions in a
multi-processor system like DL785 G6.

These
technologies help HP ProLiant servers achieve #1 virtualization performance results
and near linear scaling as demonstrated on VMMark benchmark. The 4-processor
DL585 G6 server shows 1.86
times scaling from 2-processor DL385 G6 server and the 8-processor DL785 G6
server shows 1.79
times scaling from 4-processor DL585 G6 server.

This
unparalleled virtualization leadership is demonstrated in the AMD video featuring HP ProLiant DL785
G6 running 180 VMs! AMD will have this demo live at their booth (#1408)
at VMWorld, August 31-September 3rd 2009.

Please
join us in the HP Booth (#2023) at VMWorld to see the ProLiant G6 servers,
including DL785 G6, and a showcase of a wide variety of server, storage and
networking virtualization solutions.

written by HP's Peter Johnson

New economic pressures and big changes, like new entries and consolidations in the computer industry, have been coming at warp speed, forcing a lot of customers to rethink their investment priorities. Adding to the impact of those market shifts is the very real uncertainty about SPARC futures – what with events like the impending Oracle acquisition of Sun, chip development talent brain drain from Sun and now rumored cancellations of a key enterprise CMT SPARC project.

So, have you thought about where things are headed and what you will do?

Nobody likes change - but sometimes change can be a good thing – especially if that change results in a better future. Being forced to reconsider new options might actually be the best thing that ever happened. New options might result in better answers.

Ever consider alternatives to replace your SPARC servers? HP has been promoting industry standard servers as the right choice for a very long time. Why? Have you taken a look at the performance, price/performance and TCO advantages that industry standard ProLiant servers can offer vs. staying with SPARC? It’s worth checking out our Sun TCO Challenge.

Also, with industry standard servers you don’t have to worry about making choices that may not pan out in the future. If there is anything you can rely on it’s the future of industry standard servers – that’s just one of the many attributes that makes them so attractive. Everyone everywhere is using more and more of them everyday. You would be in good company.

And with industry standard x86 servers comes the flexibility to run whatever you like - Windows, or Linux or VMware, or even Solaris, if that’s where you want to stay. Or not, it’s your choice. And to meet the needs of Sun customers who require and demand systems with mission critical virtualization capabilities as well as the high availability servers that can scale to hundreds of cores and terabytes of physical memory we offer industry standard Integrity systems. Here too, industry standards offer customers choice – choice to run enterprise UNIX with HP-UX as well as options to run Windows, Linux and OpenVMS as well as our Integrity NonStop systems. That’s what our industry standard servers give you – choice.

HP distinguishes itself as being the leader in industry standard solutions. We can offer all those solutions on ProLiant and Integrity, including Solaris on ProLiant, with full support for both the hardware and software. And moving your environment over from SPARC to x86 or Itanium. We can help with that too.

So, might this be the right time to choose a new partner?

Now I get the HP POD. The POD is set up and you can tour the POD, talk to the experts and also see the power house running the POD. Kevin Egan & Steve Cumings from HP are informative, graciously answering all questions and helping us to all fully grasp the coolness of the HP POD.

Here is a quick overview of the HP POD in plain English by Jason Newton:

Hp Pod In Plain English Hptf

Here are the technical slides from Kevin Egan's technical break out session:

HP POD Containerized Data Center

Some quick take-away points:

HP POD solves the customer challenges:

Capacity Limitations

More energy efficiency needed

Increased pressures on capital expenses

Highlights:

HP can ship the POD fully loaded in six weeks

Lower operating expenses – more efficient

22 racks 50U high --- 11000U in 40x9 container

POD cools the IT… closely coupled cooling. NO mixing of hot & cold air.
Usually cool whole datacenter or certain areas.. not as efficient.

HP’s highest density – non proprietary too.

HP can cater to extreme hot or cold temperatures. Plumbing is the issue – keeping temps right.

The POD is powered by ActivePower www.activepower.com. Partner with HP for the power house – Flywheel, 600Lbs spinning away! They also had a very cool tour. See Jason Newton’s POD in plain English tour above for info & photos from the tours.

Questions on security always come up. Can someone drive away my datacenter? Someone would reaaalllly want to do this, as the POR averages 100,000 lbs. Would need 007 to pull that off. Just get the regular security in place.

HP is investing heavily in POD technology & structure. 20FT version coming out in Q4. At the Houston Campus, they are building out 5 in a spine. HP has a full roadmap for the POD. The PODs offer a huge opportunity to defer capital expenses

One customer has as a totally remote using iLO – only stepping in to make upgrades, change out any hardware.

TCO Comparison available. Kevin’s team would be abile to run this for customers. Contact them here.

All companies have the same problems. Who are the POD customers?

Capacity expansion 40%

Scale out 30%

Disaster Recovery 10%

Transitional 10%

Military & Custom 10%

Lastly: Every HP POD conversation goes to people wanting to live in it!!!

Key quotes from our Featured Bloggers at Tech Forum on the HP POD:

"I think a lot of us drool at the processing and storage capacity potential that the POD represents, but there are a lot of other factors that make the POD a serious, almost no-brainer contender when planning for a datacenter solution."

Shane Pitman , from his blog Neowin, HP Technology Forum & Expo POD tour

"Adding to the list of pluses provided by an HP POD solution are the POD's expandability and configuration options. With space for 22 50U full-depth industry standard racks, the configuration options are enormous. Want all storage? No problem. Want all blades? Can do. Already have the technology but just looking for a better housing solution? HP will ship you an empty POD with the racks, power, and cooling infrastructure in place, ready for your existing hardware, and not just HP hardware. The HP POD will support any third party technology."

Shane Pitman, from his blog Neowin, read more at HP Technology Forum & Expo POD tour

I will post more pics in the next few days of the POD too.

Let us know your thoughts & impressions on the HP POD. Are you ready for a mobile data center?

By John Gromala, director, product marketing, Industry Standard Servers, HP

Today, HP introduced our first addition to the HP ProLiant line since the 2001 introduction of blade servers with the new extreme scale ProLiant SL-family.

This addition marks a very important inflection point in the industry as more companies adopt very large scale data centers to support their businesses. We're talking about datacenters with thousands --to tens of thousands of nodes here --a segment of data center customer we're calling Extreme Scale-out (ExSO). These customers are the Web giants (search, Web 2.0, etc.) or more traditional businesses in the high-performance computing and enterprise realm. For both, IT is a key enabler of their business and is directly linked to the product or service they deliver to customers (whether it be delivering online applications or digital crash simulations).

Traditionally, these customers have been limited to one-off custom designs or proprietary offerings to meet their needs. Metrics like performance per watt per square foot are the name of the game for these guys. Every dollar spent for power, operations or server acquisition impacts business profitability.

Enter the new HP ProLiant SL6000 Scalable System, which uses a "skinless" systems architecture that replaces the traditional chassis with an extremely lightweight rail and tray design – all based on industry standards.

SL customers use 2U a z6000 chassis that leverages shared power and fans to maximize energy efficiencies and can mix-and-match between 3 new SL servers optimized for very specific ExSO workloads:

1. · HP ProLiant SL2x170z G6 delivers high-density compute with two servers in each 1U tray for highly dense applications such as high-performance computing and web front-end applications.

2. · HP ProLiant SL160z G6 delivers increased memory with 18 dual, in-line memory module (DIMM) slots and up to two peripheral component interconnect (PCI) slots, making it ideal for large memory-cache apps.

3. · HP ProLiant SL170z G6 delivers the greatest storage capacity with up to six large form-factor Serial ATA (SATA) or serial-attached SCSI (SAS) hard drives. The server is ideal for large storage applications such as web search and database applications.

These new ProLiant SL servers join HP’s existing ProLiant DL (rack), ML (tower) and BL (blade) servers. HP’s commitment to our new Six-Core AMD Opteron™ processor is a clear signal that our technology partnership is strong, and the products are even stronger.

In today’s economic environment, customers can’t afford to make anything other than a safe bet. They are concerned about energy efficiency, performance and manageability – these are the keys to getting the most out of IT investments. With the new HP ProLiant G6 servers, based on Six-Core AMD Opteron processors, HP is increasing the capabilities of their award-winning ProLiant product line. Seven new models feature an uncompromising six-core processor that is designed for outstanding performance while still working within the same power and thermal ranges of existing HP servers based on our quad-core family.

We’ve written over and over again that consistency is critical for our customers. In large data centers, having consistency of platforms provides a huge benefit for customers, helping to turn the complexity of managing thousands of devices into a much easier task. From managing to servicing, if you can reduce the complexity and variance of the platforms, you can reduce the costs. And who wants to spend more in management costs? Especially with the business constraints of today’s market bearing down on you.

While we strive for consistency in our processors, we also offer a no-compromise approach to the products. Some in the industry may artificially limit the capabilities of the processors for marketing reasons, but we believe that keeping a consistent set of features from the top of the line down to the lowest option helps customers better manage their platforms. And, when it comes to planning, you know exactly what you are getting, from I/O to memory to cache – making it far easier to plan for your deployment needs.

HP takes the consistency concept a step further. The G6 servers have a common set of features, regardless of the processor, that allow us to cleanly integrate our technology into their platforms and bring the customer a unified product offering that makes it easier to make HP the clear choice for the data center.

From the “Sea of Sensors” to help manage the systems, to the commonality across power supplies and even the HP ProLiant Onboard Administrator, managing an HP server becomes a simple, and most importantly, repeatable activity. This helps drive more consistency in the data center and allows you to maximize your critical IT resources.

We’re also very excited about the new levels of performance that customers will see with a Six-Core AMD Opteron processor, and a great compliment to that is the new 6GB/second SAS drives that, when combined with the HP Smart Array controllers, allow the I/O subsystem to keep pace with all of those cores. Combining that with our new HT Assist feature is expected to bring an unprecedented level of I/O and memory throughput for AMD-based ProLiant servers.

With all of this new performance, we haven’t pushed the power consumption up, allowing the new six-core processors to work in the same power and thermal ranges as their four-core counterparts. If your goal is to get the most out of your data center while keeping a “green IT” focus, this is the product for you.

There is no greater compliment than being chosen as the cornerstone of a great platform, and with the new G6 servers, there are seven new reasons for customers to choose HP ProLiant G6 servers featuring AMD Opteron processors, each a winning hand for solving today’s IT challenges without breaking the bank.

On January15th HP formally unveiled the Insight software brand, which includes our 3 suites, Insight Control, Insight Dynamics - VSE for ProLiant, and the Virtual Server Environment for Integrity, as well as Systems Insight Manager as an onramp to HP platforms.

We also announced several key product enhancements as part of our Adaptive Infrastructure momentum announcement on January 15th:

new extensions to Insight Dynamics - VSE, HP Insight Orchestration for automated provisioning, and Insight Recovery for cost-effective disaster recovery

enhancements to the capacity planning/consolidation capabilities of ID-VSE with support for non-HP x86 servers such as Dell and IBM, providing more on-ramps to industry-leading HP platforms

expanded hypervisor support for Insight Dynamics - VSE to include Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESXi, in addition to ESX

new flexibility options for the HP Virtual Server Environment for HP Integrity servers include online migration for HP Integrity Virtual Machines and the ability to move workloads on physical HP Integrity blade servers with drag-and-drop ease with the logical server capability

TCE and functionality enhancements for the Insight Control Environment for an improved purchasing experience and extended remote management capabilities

Of particular note is the new extension to Insight Dynamics -VSE, Insight Orchestration. The Insight Orchestration option is designed to improve data center administrator productivity. With the push of a button, applications can be assigned to physical and virtual servers, as well as to specific storage and network resources - and then returned to the pool when no longer needed. Want to see how Insight Dynamics -VSE, Insight Orchestration can help you?
For me, the event started with a 2-day HP user conference, attracting some of HP’s largest HPC customers. It was a very full 2 days, with lectures on many subjects from customers, Intel, AMD, software development companies, and of course HP. Even though I work here, I learned a lot about projects in other parts of the company.

At the SC08 show, I saw my 1st HP POD – portable optimized datacenter – a 40-foot-long shipping container on the outside, and a self-contained computer facility on the inside. This excellently-designed mobile facility can contain 3500 servers or 12,000 disk drives, in standard 19” racks. Just provide a flat location, power, chilled water, and a network cable, and you have a new computer room.

To make the week more interesting, AMD announced the new Opteron Shanghai processor – higher clock speed, bigger cache, faster Northbridge, and improved performance:power ratio.

One of the good things about big companies is that they spawn startups. This year, a startup company announced a new HPC architecture at SC08. Nearly all the employees are my friends and previous HP co-workers. Check out www.conveycomputer.com

HP ProLiant achieved the #1 ranking in both the Weighted Satisfaction Index (WSI) and the Overall Satisfaction Rating. The WSI ranking is a weighted customer satisfaction score that considers what is important and how satisfied customers are with each area of customer satisfaction. The overall satisfaction rating is the response from customers when asked “Overall how satisfied are you?”. Together, these two indicators provide us with a quick snapshot of customer satisfaction for each vendor surveyed.
With these results, HP now has sole leadership and no longer shares the #1 position with the competition. HP was the only competitor to demonstrate gains in every category measured by TBR (9 in total). Specifically, the results in Hardware Quality/Reliability, Management Tools, Server Value and Parts Availability were significantly higher than industry averages. TBR identified these four (4) areas as providing a competitive advantage for HP over its competition. HP also scored higher than industry averages in the all-important category of Overall Satisfaction. According to TBR, customer expectations continue to rise as customers seek out new technology advances to counter serious datacenter challenges. Customers are also searching for much more than attractive purchase pricing. Server value incorporates all expectations, incorporating everything from reliability to technical support and management tools. The influence of relationship quality also figures strongly into customers’ perceptions of value. Our focus on delivering the products customers want continues to pay off. For nine (9) consecutive reporting periods, HP has remained ahead of the competition as the brand perceived as most differentiated. Customers continue to recognize the value HP delivers in the ProLiant brand.

And it gets better! Customer Loyalty is another excellent category for HP. For the last seven (7) quarters, HP has held the #1 position in customer loyalty. HP scores in customer loyalty for the last two quarters are the highest scores on record (since 2Q-2005).
One does not have to look far when looking for reasons why HP dominates customer loyalty. Customers recognize differentiated value. One example is in the area of server management. TBR reports that HP customers place management higher in priority than customers of our competitors. Customers expect more from HP and the results show HP has delivered. HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) is a single software tool providing a consolidated view of everything you need to manage your server and it comes with every HP server. TBR also measures customer expectations, customer priorities, and how well a company is meeting those needs. According to the survey, customers consider hardware quality, parts availability, and overall value as the three most important attributes of a server vendor. For customer expectations, scores show HP is meeting customer expectations in every measurable category, and, more importantly, HP ranks #1 in all three areas. HP is focused on these attributes and also sees them as critical to our customers’ success. We continue to drive improvements in these areas by working with our developers, partners, and suppliers to drive quality into every server. As an example, by designing servers focused on customer self repair (CSR) customers have the flexibility to schedule and make a repair at their convenience. Where do we go next? These results have set the bar higher and clearly identified the market leader. Our challenge moving forward will be to accelerate the pace and deliver on the expectations of our customers. We’re committed to doing this – and it is evidenced in our offerings from the last few quarters. HP is listening to customers and delivering servers that reduce power consumption, expands virtualization, and enable success in the most demanding and complex computing environments. I welcome your comments – tell me how we are doing. Are there areas we can improve? Let me know – HP’s focus is on the customer and we need your input.

Views of the HP POD

The HP POD had a very busy week indeed... and we had some great photos taken while it was in the Silicon Valley.
