Our recent paper on high-throughput image-based counterfeit detection is now available on the HP Labs Technical Report website. This research shows that functional imaging (imaging with a specific task accomplishment) can be achieved with very high image compression.

This paper will also appear in the IEEE IGARSS 2009 (http://www.igarss09.org/) Proceedings, as it has high relevancy to remote sensing (another functional imaging task). Other functional imaging taks include surveillance, point-of-sale (checkout) scanning, license plate reading, signage translation, and others.
