Hiking in the mountains above the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, I saw the dead tree shown in the photo below... I was interested in how the tree had died. Was it too high on the mountain? Was the ground beneath it too porous to hold water during the growing season? Was it old? Was it due to a late frost...
