A recent article on Ad Age regarding age verification legislation of social media sites has me a bit intrigued and frankly a bit puzzled. As has been reported, MySpace just deleted 29,000 registered sex offenders from its popular social media site. And now, North Carolina is introducing legislation that would require age verification or parental consent for under age children to participate on the site.
I can understand wanting to protect our children from the dangers of the online world. Social media and the internet in general can be a very dark and ensuring our children’s safety should be a primary concern. Where governmental action and parenting start and stop is a question for debate.
However, what are we doing about the problem – the registered sexual offenders. If we move them off of social networking sites they’ll just end up elsewhere on the web – in more chat rooms, etc.
What are your thoughts about this serious problem? What suggestions do you have?
